"From Shantou to Your Warehouse: How Toy Shipping Actually Works"
For most first-time importers, the mystery isn't making toys — it's moving them. Shipping is where timelines blow up, costs surprise, and margin disappears. Here's how toy shipping actually works from Shantou and Chenghai — China's toy manufacturing cluster — to your warehouse.
The route, end to end
- Factory → port (inland trucking): goods leave the factory, clear export customs, and load at Shantou, Shenzhen, or Guangzhou
- Ocean transit: 25–40 days to US/EU main ports; 7–20 days within Asia
- Destination port → your warehouse: customs clearance, duties, drayage, last mile
Total door-to-door for sea freight: typically 45–70 days from order-ready to warehouse. Air freight cuts transit to 5–10 days at 5–8× the cost.
FOB, CIF, DDP — what you're actually agreeing to
| Term | Who arranges freight | Who carries risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| FOB | You (via your forwarder) | You, once on board | Buyers with a trusted forwarder — most transparent |
| CIF | Seller to your port | Seller to port, then you | Middle ground; seller books sea leg |
| DDP | Seller, door-to-door | Seller almost all the way | First-time buyers who want simplicity (at a markup) |
Our standard terms are FOB Shantou / FOB Shenzhen — you control the freight leg and see real costs. For a first order, FOB plus an independent forwarder is the setup most buyers end up keeping.
Container math
Toys ship light but bulky — cube matters more than weight:
- 20ft container: ~28 m³ — good for dense goods (blocks, RC)
- 40ft HQ: ~68 m³ — the default for plush, squishy, boxed goods
A common mistake: ordering by unit count without checking carton dimensions. A container of bagged squishy and a container of boxed block sets have completely different cost-per-unit freight. Your supplier's packing list (cartons per SKU, CBM total) tells you what you'll pay.
Customs basics
- HS codes determine duty rates — confirm them before quoting landed cost
- Compliance docs (CE/EN71/ASTM F963/CPC) may be requested at clearance — have them on file before shipment
- Country of origin marking must be on packaging for most markets
- A customs hold for missing docs costs more in demurrage than any document ever saved
The expensive mistakes
- No inspection before loading — one bad container erases years of unit-price savings
- Air freight panic — late planning costs more than the sea freight you avoided
- Ignoring peak season — Q3/Q4 space gets tight; book early or pay surge rates
- Split shipments without math — three LCL shipments often cost more than one FCL
- Verbal shipping agreements — get Incoterms and dates in the PO
